Case Description
I am writing hoping that this case will somehow make it into the hands and hopefully into the heart of someone that can help...... I was abused for years in my marriage to my daughters' father and back in 2001 I finally found the courage to leave. I packed up my daughters and the few things that I could fit into my mini van and moved into my own apartment. I recently moved to the Rapid City, SD area after 11 years in Wyoming. Everything about my life and my daughters lives, since then, has changed for the better except for one thing.... my teeth. Some of my teeth were knocked out or broken throughout the abuse and they have only decayed badly from there due to my inability to be able to afford dental insurance, and due to the fact that many of the teeth in my mouth are still my baby teeth. I wear a partial for my two front teeth, but it often causes tremendous pain in my gums and the roof of my mouth, so it is hard to wear it as much as I'd like to. The last time I was at a dentist to have my teeth evaluated was well over a year ago, and at that time I had over 16 absessed teeth, and I don't remember how many cavaties but I know there was alot. Basically, if I remember correctly, every tooth in my mouth needed fixed in some way, shape, or form, and I'm not even sure that the dentist said that she could even save alot of my natural teeth at all. I am in so much pain on a daily basis from my teeth that I can no longer eat anything cold because it only intensifies the pain due to sensitivity.... I have to be careful not to eat anything really hard or it causes more of my teeth to break off.... I am in the ER often because of the infection and pain in my mouth and have come to rely heavily on antibiotics and ibuprofen to function on a daily basis. I just want the pain to stop .... I just want to be able to sleep at night without waking up in pain .... I'm only 31 years old and I want to live long enough to watch my daughters grow up and I know that if the infection continues, it could kill me. I don't know if anyone would be willing to help me through pro bono work, however, I am hoping that I will become one of those women that someone can help heal ... not only physically but emotionally as well .... every time I look in the mirror, every time I smile, it is a constant reminder of what happened to me. I have moved on with my life and let alot of the pain from my past go, and it just would be nice to be able to have my teeth fixed as a very last step in my healing process. Please can someone help me? I would be forever grateful and you would be forever in my heart if you will consider helping me. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I do have pictures for your review if you would like to see them. My contact information will be at the bottom of this message. Again, thank you and God Bless you.....
Sincerely,
Christie christina-pederson@hotmail.com

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Christie, you have an amazing story. Not many have the courage that you have to go through what you did. There is a program called Give Back a Smile associated with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. It exists to help people like you. There is an application involved (here''''''''''''''''s a link: http://www.aacd.com/foundation/gbassurvivorapplication.asp.There may be a dentist near you who participates. That would be the most direct route to getting you better. I understand how you feel about your smile right now. This is a great group, that is here to help.I hope this is the new start you have been looking for,Dr. Scott Greenhalgh
