Case Description
Dear Dentist,
Please please take the time to help my daughter out. My daughter was diagnosed with crossbite class III. Last week, an Orthodontist said that and he said that no treatment can start at this age and we will have to wait until she is 8.5 years. He also said that at the age of 14 years, she will need a surgery to remove something from the jaw or joint, I am not sure.
My question is:
- Is there any chance to start treatment at her age now (6 years)? - Is there any way to avoid the surgery? - Can she live a normal life without the surgery? Is it really mandatory? - What could happen if she did not undergo such surgery?
Please please let me know if an early treatment can avoid her such surgery. Is the surgery really serious? What is the success rate?
Please please let me know if we can start a treatment right now?
I need your help please.
thanks, MZ

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I feel your concern and you have some great questions, but it would be impossible to answer them without a comprehensive evaluation and X Rays. I work with a fantastic orthodontist named Scott Ohmart. You should see him for a 2nd opinion. I can answer that many people live a normal life with out surgery to correct a Class III crossbite.Hope this helps. Dr Ohmart''''s # (303) 979-0211Dr Guy Grabiak

Hi MZ,That''''s an excellent and difficult question to answer. Treatment can be rendered with success DEPENDING on the current severity of the situation. If the condition is mild to moderate, the earlier the treatment, the more successful the outcome. I have actually treated children at the age of 4. However, this does not mean that you daughter should. If your daughter is severe, then it the outcome is questionable. I would need to examine your daughter before I give you a more definative answer.Dr. Andrew Nguyen.

A crossbite is very common to see in young children and is easily corrected with an expander, The typical age to place an expander is between ages 6-9 years old, depending on the patients growth pattern. Lastly this doesn''''t mean that surgery is needed in the at a later date. Actually the reason for placing and expander at and early age is to avoid any type of surgical procedure in the future. Obviously we would have to see your child to answer of your questions, but my best recommendation it to get another opinion by myself or another orthodontist. Hope that helps.Dr. Scott Ohmart303-713-1950

Dear MZ,Just so you know, I am an endodontist, not a general dentist. That means I do root canals and do not perform any sort of general dentistry or orthodontics. As far as answering your questions, you SHOULD ask the orthodontist and or your general dentist ALL these questions and get good explainations.HOWEVER, what I do know:Until children have there adult teeth and roots formed they cannot have orthodontics started and so, 8.5 seems to be an appropriate age to start some ortho. Some surgery can be avoided depending on the ortho however, if the orthodontist recommends it, it is probably a good recommendation. It sounds, from your email, that your are very concerned about your child, however, you need to talk to your orthodontist about these concerns. They know better than anyone else what is best for your child. Give them a call and make sure they explain everything to you. Kind regards

The American Association of Orthodontists does sugget consults at age 7 however I have teated younger patients with success as well. Sometimes surgery can be avoided with early intervention. You may consider getting a second opinion.Good Luck!
