Case Description
Hi,
My braces are finally coming off and I want to finish my mouth masterpiece with some gum contouring. I went with braces instead of veneers to straighten and fill the gaps in my teeth/fix my bite. My question is whether I need to find a periodontist that specializes in cosmetic gum contouring or if a cosmetic dentist would be better? Also, what is the cost range-are we talking hundreds or thousands?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

There will be several options for you to consider as you put the final touches on your smile. I would recommend using a Waterlase to not only sculpt the tissues beautifully, but also to make the procedure as painless as possible. While every person has a different perception of pain, we have completed many of these procedures using only a topical anesthetic. And whether or not you require additional anesthetic, the difference in discomfort after the procedure makes the Waterlase a vastly better choice. Often, patients use only ibuprofen to manage any discomfort. My office and I would enjoy the opportunity to meet you, discuss your esthetic needs and present our treatment options. Congratulations on completing your orthodontic care. Dr. Pat Prendergast

Congratulations on finishing your braces! You have a great question, good for you for planning well toward the final result. Here is how I would approach it: I would have a cosmetic dentist evaluate and discuss your concerns. Some corrections can be made easily, with a laser. If there are many changes or certain dramatic ones, then you may need a periodontist to do that procedure. For the years ahead to come, really the cosmetic dentist will be responsible for helping you maintain the results that you want, and really the overall health of your mouth. (A common misnomer I see is that you should just see the cosmetic dentist for this limited esthetic procedure, then just "go back to your regular dentist" for all of the other things. I believe that the durability of the esthetic results depend heavily on how the whole system works.)The fee can vary widely, and really depends upon how much needs to be done (realistically, from a few hundred, to even a couple of thousand).Contact me directly if you need other help!

Are you happy with your smile at this point? It the bit fixed and stable?Do the color and shape of the teeth please you?How much of the gums and on which teeth need to be contoured? If could be a few hundred or more depending on how many teeth are involved. My recommendation would be to start with a General Dentist who completes a comprehesive exam, digital photos, and smile analyze. Call me directly if I can answer your questions in more detail.Guy Grabiak, DMD303 988 6110
